Center focuses on empowerment, education

The Women's Resource Center of Durango has grown from serving a few hundred women annually to 1,500 in 2014, said Liz Mora, the center's executive director.

It opened in 1987 and advocates for the personal empowerment and economic self-sufficiency of women and families in La Plata County.

For women and families in crisis or transition, the center provides a road map of resources to help them reach a place of emotional and financial stability. Seminars on divorce and custody are offered, along with referrals to attorneys.

For small business owners, the center provides the supports necessary for those businesses to be successful.

For girls, WRC provides the tools and resources necessary to make thoughtful decisions about their futures.

Scholarships for women attending college, along with one-time grants from the Womenade program, round out the center's offerings.
