The Center of Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College will conclude its “Women in the Southwest” summer lecture series at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday with a presentation by Harvey Leake, “Slim Woman: Louisa Wade Wetherill of Kayenta,” in the center’s Lyceum room.
From 1906 to 1944, Louisa Wade Wetherill and her husband, John, made their home with the Navajos of the Monument Valley area. Wetherill’s neighbors gave her the name Asthon Sosi, which translates to “The Slim Woman.” She worked with Navajos to preserve the ancient insights from their elders. Her voluminous records provide a window into their authentic approach to life.
Leake, a great-grandson of the Wetherills, spent years researching his ancestors who explored the Four Corners, discovered archaeological sites, traded with the Navajos and guided visitors into the backcountry.
