Cessna plane goes down north of Purgatory Resort

La Plata County Search and Rescue and the San Juan County Sheriff’s Department responded Sunday evening to the site of a plane crash north of Purgatory Resort.

A Cessna plane went down near the Grizzly Peak area, San Juan sheriff’s officials told KCJT-TV on Sunday.

The Colorado Civil Air Patrol in Grand Junction responded about 3:30 p.m. Sunday after the plane went off the radar, the TV station reported.

Ground teams were reportedly on the scene and preparing the site for an investigation Monday morning.

CAP Lt. Col. Mike Daniels said the missing aircraft left California on Sunday morning and stopped for fuel in Arizona en route to Amarillo, Texas. It disappeared from radar after refueling in Arizona, the station reported.

Officials were searching the Grizzly Peak area based on the plane’s last radar hits and cellphone forensic coordinates.

There was no other information available Sunday night on how many people were on board the aircraft or why it went missing.

Butch Knowlton, director of the La Plata County Office of Emergency Management, said four people from La Plata County Search and Rescue would be airlifted Sunday evening to the site of the crash at the head of Cascade Creek.

The personnel were to be airlifted from Purgatory.

Knowlton said Search and Rescue was assisting the San Juan County Sheriff’s Department.
