Veteran journalist Hollis Walker has joined the Herald as its editorial page editor.
Walker has journalism degrees from the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas, and wrote and edited for nine years at the Santa Fe New Mexican. She also taught communication for two years at Highlands University in Las Vegas, New Mexico.
Hollis’ writing has appeared in numerous regional and national publications, from Mother Earth News to The Wall Street Journal.
She also is an ordained interfaith minister who has worked in hospital and hospice care settings.
Hollis succeeds Robert Meyerowitz, who held the position for two years. Meyerowitz creatively wrote about significant local issues, and drew from his extensive reading to tie present events to past history, often with an unusual perspective.
Hollis knows northern New Mexico and the southwest corner of Colorado, and I am pleased that she will be both overseeing and contributing to the opinion pages.
“I am excited to be living in Durango and learning about the people here and what they care most about,” she said. “I sincerely hope to make a positive contribution to the continuing growth of the community and surrounding areas.”
