Champagne will honor community as DA

I’m writing in today to talk about Christian Champagne.

I met Mr. Champagne when I became the SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) nurse coordinator for the 6th Judicial District. Through our meetings with the Sexual Assault Response Team, I immediately noticed his continued involvement and approachability whenever questions arose.

He has been a very helpful resource with our continuous reviews of trial process, documentation that is provided to the court and examples of the dialogue we should expect. He has put the SANE team at ease with the trial process with his one-on-one preparation to prosecute sex crimes in our community.

It is evident that he insists on a victim-centered, community-based approach.

“Victim centered” means that we consult, respect and honor the victim’s input whenever possible. We work for the victims, and honoring the victims and their desire for justice is critical to an effective DA’s Office.

“Community based” means we reflect the values and conscience of our community regarding our approach to criminal justice and honoring the community’s best interests in the long term.

He has been present for our community-wide training and policy meetings regarding sexual assault. His long-term involvement is clearly evident through the strong relationships he has forged with local law enforcement agencies, community partners (including Sexual Assault Services Organization, Alternative Horizons, SANE, Fort Lewis College and La Plata Youth Services).

He understands the role of each agency and respects the individual processes that each brings to victim services.

His continued involvement has shown that he’s always willing to help improve the process when possible. Just as he is integrated within the community partners for sexual assault, he has the same collaboration within the District Attorney’s Office that has been his team for the last 7½ years.

He is ready, day one, to be the DA. I have seen his passion and drive. I am confident that he is an advocate for our community.

Vote Christian Champagne on the June 28 primary ballot.
