The Mountain Studies Institute invites the public to join its third field day to monitor forest health on Saturday.
Participants will largely be from the San Juan Headwaters Forest Health Partnership, 15 to 20 public and private groups that formed in 2009 and then formalized their relationship two years later.
Interested people should gather at 7 a.m. at the Pagosa Springs Public Library, 811 Eighth St. to carpool to the field of activities on Four Mile Road.
They will spend about an hour learning about birds from a member of the Weminuche Audubon Society and then spend the rest of the day learning how MSI monitors aspects of forest health such as wildlife habitat, water and forest understory.
Anyone going should take a lunch, water and rain gear.
