Change attitudes; make communities safe

In response to the letter from TD Lake (Herald, Oct. 30) about the offensive sign at a local eatery, I want to commend him for speaking out. As a man, I feel the need to add to his comments.

We have a president who spoke of acts toward women that are repulsive and he was still elected. We had a violent gang-rape of a woman in our community. We’ve been hearing a lot about sexual harassment in the news.

It’s time for us, men in particular, to confront our attitudes toward females and be co-creators in making our communities safe.

We are confronted every day by sexualized images of women in the most common places. We see it in convenience stores, grocery stores and in every kind of media we have available.

Most men who are exposed to these images are not going to commit violence toward women. But we need to take a serious look at how the lackadaisical attitude men have about objectifying women contributes to creating environments where their personhood is compromised.
