Changes coming to local music hub

Balcony Bar and Grill’s Backstage downsized, outdoor patio to stay open year-round
Changes are ahead for the Balcony Bar and Grill, including downsizing the Backstage portion of the space at 600 Main Ave.

Changes are coming to the Balcony Bar and Grill, the indoor/outdoor watering hole known for live music.

Owner Jeff Wall said they are downsizing the Backstage, the indoor portion of the bar, to maintain a sustainable business in a competitive market with rising rent, among other reasons.

A large portion of the new, approximately 625-square-foot indoor section will be located closest to College Drive. The new bar will have TVs, a pool table and possibly other games.

Wall said he is uncertain what the landlord’s plan is for the rest of the space.

Construction on the indoor section will be done through Oct. 11. The outdoor balcony space will remain open during construction and will be open year-round.

Wall said the Balcony has never stayed open during the winter since he has owned the bar over the past nine years. But imbibers won’t have to rely on whiskey alone to keep them warm during the chilly months: Wall said he will enclose the space and add heaters to keep patrons comfortable. He also plans to have live music through November, if the weather permits.

Sound hounds need not worry. During spring and summer on the Balcony, “(music) will be in full swing, just like normal,” he said.

Durango band The Clods will play at 9 p.m. today (Friday) before the Backstage’s final show starting at 8 p.m. Saturday with PJ Moon & the Swappers.
