Chapman Hill to open today

Chapman Hill will open from noon to 6 p.m. today. The Big Tow line will carry skiers and snowboarders up Durango’s ski hill. The Little Tow will begin operating Dec. 21.

Skiers and snowboarders can begin carving turns in Durango.

Chapman Hill, the city’s in-town ski slope, will be open from noon to 6 p.m. today, launching the winter season.

Only the Big Tow line will be running. The Little Tow will begin operating Dec. 21.

Kelli Jaycox, recreation manager for the city of Durango, said Chapman Hill is “an affordable place to learn to ski that’s close to home.”

Last winter, Chapman Hill hosted 1,636 daily users, and 1,404 season-pass holders.

Chapman Hill, 500 Florida Road, also has benefited youth ski teams, Jaycox said.

“They train at Chapman after school,” she said. “It makes it a lot more accessible to more people.”

Lift tickets are $12 for adults ages 18 to 59, $10 for children ages 6 to 17, $5 for children ages 4 and 5 and $4 for adults age 60 and older. Children age 3 and younger are free.

Season passes are $100 for adults, with discounts for other age groups and families.

Normal hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends and 3 to 7 p.m. Monday-Friday.

During winter break for Durango School District 9-R, Chapman Hill will be open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Dec. 21 to Jan. 5.

On Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, Chapman Hill will be open from noon to 4 p.m. The ski hill will be closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
