Logan Griffith, the 19-year-old suspect in Saturday’s armed robbery of Rocky Mountain High, a medical marijuana dispensary in the Ptarmigan Center II, was in custody in the La Plata County jail on Sunday.

He was arrested on charges of aggravated robbery of a controlled substance, assault on a peace officer, resisting arrest and obstructing police.

The police were alerted at 6:31 p.m. by a call from a dispensary employee, at Ptarmigan Center II, East Animas Road (County Road 250) and Florida Road (County Road 240).

Durango Police Department Lt. Darrell Robertson gave this account:

“A man clad in a dark-colored hoodie and wearing a ski mask and carrying a handgun entered the dispensary and confronted the clerk.

“There were two clerks and a customer in the store at the time,” Robertson said.

The man bound the employee with duct tape and zip ties, Robertson said. At that moment, he came face to face with the customer and immobilized him, also with duct tape and zip ties.

The gunman found the other employee hiding in the bathroom and forced him to open a safe. He took an undisclosed amount of cash and marijuana products from the safe. The suspect walked the employee to the cash register from which he took $2,700. He then bound the employee in the same manner and ran out the backdoor.

A suspect was arrested about 45 minutes later as he was walking westbound on County Road 251 near Holly Avenue. He was identified by the Durango Police Department as Griffith, of Bayfield.

When police officers stopped the suspect on County Road 251, Griffith resisted arrest and was shot with a taser. The first round was ineffective, so officers fired a second round to control him.

Officers found evidence consistent with the crime in a backpack the suspect carried. Among the evidence was a loaded handgun with a chambered round, Robertson said.

The suspect was transported to Mercy Regional Medical Center for observation of the effect of the stun gun, Robertson said.
