'Charm' headline tone deaf to ranchers’ reality

Shame on you, Durango Herald, for the headline, “High Country Cattle Auction brings top-notch stock and country charm to Southwest Colorado,” (Herald, Oct. 1).

If you think for one minute that my ranch friends work their backsides off day in and day out, week after week, year upon year to provide charm, you are plainly insulting. You demean the toil, the worry, the skill, and the intelligence needed to run a successful business raising the critters that feed you.

If the trendy crowd that talks “local first” even imagines that maintaining fences, putting up hay, stewarding cattle through heat and cold is romantic, they need only walk a day – many miles each day – in the work boots of area ranchers. Then they can pack up their fancy SUVs and head back to the cities whence they came.
