Charters story contained impossible number

We are juniors at Animas High School, and we recently read a Herald story titled “Who are charters for?” (May 11). This story focuses on Animas High School and its racial diversity (or lack thereof). Though we don’t mind seeing our school in opinion pieces, it’s very disconcerting to find a case where statistical evidence is misused in a story. It states that La Plata County is 89.7 percent white, 12.3 percent Hispanic and 6.5 percent Native American. This totals 108.5 percent.

It also upset us how the story quoted Animas High School students. Marley was asked about the best part of Animas. This has nothing to do with the issue at hand in the story. Race is not the whole story behind diversity, either. Perhaps economic diversity would be a more interesting focal point for this story. As Animas students, we welcome different opinions about all issues.

We are also taught to have credible evidence to back up our claims in projects we create. We thank the Herald for its opinion, and we offer ours in return.
