I’m writing in support of Gwen Lachelt and in opposition to the recall effort, which may be funded by an outside agency attempting to influence local politics.
It has been deeply disturbing to me to read hateful, divisive half-truths regarding Gwen Lachelt, a twice elected public official, in the newspaper and on Facebook. It seems reflective of the national political climate. For those in favor of a recall, I ask on what basis?
As many others have pointed out, after investigation by an independent third party, no ethics violations were found on the part of either Gwen Lachelt or Brad Blake. If the recall effort is in response to the land use code update, all three county commissioners, not only Gwen Lachelt, directed staff to address the 30-year-old code, which is a draft and will undoubtedly have numerous revisions in response to community input.
A recall effort should only be in response to serious violations or malfeasance. The cost of a special election should not be imposed upon taxpayers simply because your politics are not in sync with an elected official. Additionally, Gwen is term limited.
For those who would sign a recall petition, please check your facts before signing, and use your time and energy to work with the commissioners and planning staff. I think you will find they are open to community input.
