Another judicial vacancy has opened in the 6th Judicial District – which includes Archuleta, La Plata and San Juan counties – after Chief District Judge Jeffrey Wilson announced plans to retire at the start of next year.

Wilson has served as district court judge for 23 years, after his initial appointment in July 2002. He was appointed chief judge in 2016, where he oversaw administrative duties of the 6th Judicial District, including appointing the district administrator, chief probation officer and clerks of court.

Wilson’s retirement follows that of Judge Suzzane Carlson’s, whose replacement was recently announced.

The 6th Judicial District Nominating Commission will meet Oct. 8 to interview and select nominees for appointment by Gov. Jared Polis. The appointed judge will take the bench Jan. 2.

Applicants must have been admitted to the practice of law in Colorado for five years and be registered to vote in the 6th Judicial District by the time they are sworn in.

Applications are due by 4 p.m. Sept. 24. The names of applicants will be made public after the application period closes.

Those interested in nominating a candidate can submit a letter to the nominating committee and the ex officio chair. Letters must be received by 4 p.m. Sept. 17 to be considered.

Members of the nominating commission are: Maya Kane, James Garrett, Sarah Moore, Barrie Newberger King, James Cross and Paul DeBell.

The annual salary for the position is $198,798.
