The Colorado High School Activities Association announced its 2016 All-State rosters on Friday morning with Ignacio senior Wyatt Hayes being named to the Class 2A Second Team.
Hayes led the Bobcats in nearly every statistical category with 14.2 points, 8.5 rebounds, 7.4 assists and 4.7 steals per game. Ignacio finished the season with a 22-4 overall record and 11-0 in the San Juan Basin League, and a ninth league title under head coach Chris Valdez.
Ignacio’s season ended with a disappointing showing in the state tournament with a one-point loss to Holyoke, 61-60, and a season ending defeat to Poania, 46-41. Throughout the postseason, however, Hayes battled two ear infections and the flu. The versatile point guard will play for Fort Lewis College next season.
Durango’s Orion Clay was named as an Honorable Mention for the boys team.
Clay led the Demons with 13.6 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. The DHS boys finished with a 17-8 overall record with a 6-4 record in the Southwestern League. The Demons were bounced from this year’s CHSAA State Tournament in the second round when they lost 52-41 to the eventual state champions Pueblo West.
DHS junior Katrina Chandler was also given an Honorable Mention. Chandler led the Demons with 15 points, 3.8 assists and 2.2 steals per game. The girls finished the season with a 16-8 overall record and 4-4 in the Southwestern League before losing to Sand Creek, 72-61, in the second round of the state tournament.
Sophomore Hilda Garcia was named an Honorable Mention for Ignacio. Garcia led Ignacio with 14.7 points and 2.7 assists per game.
Ignacio finished the year with a 17-5 overall record with an 11-1 San Juan Basin League record. The Bobcats won the league title, but lost in the first round of the Region 1 Tournament as a No. 1 seed. Ignacio lost to No. 8 Custer County, 37-36.
Around the state, Pueblo West not only won the championship, but star player David Simental was named the Class 4A CHSAA Player of the Year while head coach Bobby Tyler was named Coach of the Year.
For Class 2A, Sanford was the recipient of both awards with Miles Caldon as Player of the Year, and Rhett Larsen as Coach of the Year.
Mesa Ridge’s Kylee Shook took home the Class 4A CHSAA Player of the Year for the girls, and Amy Bahl of Evergreen was recognized as Coach of the Year.
Yuma’s Logan Hixon was named Player of the Year, and Mike Neil won Coach of the Year at the Class 2A level.
Pagosa Springs’ Taylor Lee-Hammer was named to the Class 3A First Team.
