Citizens’ Police Academy returns March 23

Applications for the Citizens’ Police Academy are being accepted by the Durango Police Department. The academy begins March 23. Participation in the academy requires a commitment of one night a week for the 10-week program. Classes are held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursdays at the Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave., with a graduation on May 25. The academy is limited to 25 participants. DPD officers teach the program.

The academy is designed to provide La Plata County residents with firsthand information about how DPD works. The sessions include information about community policing, internet safety, code enforcement, domestic violence, patrol operations, traffic and tactical response. Participants will have the opportunity to ride with an on-duty officer and sit in with a dispatcher to experience what officers see, hear and do in response to various circumstances.

Applications are available online at durangogov.org/citizensacademy.

For information, call the Durango Police Department at 375-4701 or stop by the police department at 990 East Second Ave.
