City buildings could be costly

New police station price: $19 million
The employees who work at the police station share 14,000 square feet, but they need 40,000. A new Durango Police Station is estimated to cost $19 million.

New city buildings are estimated to cost tens of millions of dollars, but there is no clear source to fund any of the construction projects.

Levi Lloyd, director of city operations, presented some of the project estimates to the Durango City Council on Tuesday.

He addressed two of the seven buildings that were included in a master plan of the city’s needs by the Blythe Group. The city will eventually need to double the floor space of these buildings, according city consultants.

“We’ve seen significant growth,” he said.

A new law-enforcement campus could cost $19 million, if the city built it a 4 to 5 acre parcel that would allow for adequate parking, Lloyd said. A site has not been identified yet.

Police officers and support staff members were identified as city employees most in need of additional space. They are currently sharing 14,000 square feet and they need 40,000 square feet.

City officials would also like to replace City Hall with a building that could house all administrative branches, such as the planing and finance departments.

A new four-story building on the current City Hall site to serve this purpose could cost $31 million, Lloyd said.

While construction is underway, employees could be housed in the Carnegie Building and the police station.

Once the police station building is no longer needed it could be torn down and replaced with a parking garage, he said.

These needs and how to pay for them present major issues for future city councils to consider, Councilor Sweetie Marbury said.

The city also faces major infrastructure needs including a sewer-treatment plant and a water-treatment plant that will both be more than $50 million.
