The city of Durango’s Planning Commission is holding a special meeting today at 6 p.m. to consider retail and medical marijuana land uses.

Durango is in the process of repealing its old land use development code and approving a new set of codes to take its place. The city is working toward having the new land use code, along with the new regulations allowing retail pot sales in Durango and related medical pot rules, ready to take effect July 1.

The Durango City Council has proposed allowing medical marijuana centers, recreational marijuana stores and retail pot testing businesses within city limits. Retail and medical pot establishments could set up shop in certain areas, including the Central Business District downtown, zoned commercial areas and business parks.

City staff proposed allowing no more than one dispensary per block segment downtown and permitting only one on corner lots of an intersection. Pot businesses may also go in mixed-use buildings provided it’s not located on the same floor as a residence and has a separate entrance.

Marijuana businesses are barred by state and federal law from locating closer than 1,000 feet from addiction recovery centers, schools and residential day care buildings. Councilors had proposed a 250-foot separation from parks that have children’s playground equipment.

The City Council is scheduled to consider the new land use code, recreational and medical marijuana regulations and new fees for pot establishments at its 5:30 p.m. Tuesday meeting.
