Are Durango city councilors really so naive that they think that easing ADU regulations in our city will somehow magically solve the affordable housing problem in Durango? They are simply being played by the Realtors, rental property owners and rental management companies in our community.
The ADU that was built on top of a garage next door to me and stares down into my backyard rents for $2,100 per month. And another ADU built on our block up here in Animas City has the owner living in the ADU while they rent out their two bedroom one bathroom house for $3,500 per month as an Airbnb! Does any of this sound like affordable workforce or family housing to you?
Durango has never made any effort to study the effects of increased density on infrastructure or quality of life here either. Increased traffic and parking, water and sewer demand, electric and gas service, stormwater runoff, etc. should all be addressed as part of this issue.
Wake up and look at the unintended consequences of this ill-conceived idea. Just follow the money trail if you really want to know who and what is behind this proposal.
