City, county must enforce bear policy

Our local governments say they care about what happens to the bears in our community. They pretend they want to protect them. They pretend they are concerned about bear attacks.

So, why are there laws to support this, yet no one enforces them? Why do citizens and businesses of the city of Durango and La Plata County continue to get away with breaking the law? What about those folks who spend a lot of money to comply with the law and care about the community and bear population?

What a slap in the face to them. We are responsible citizens in a county where local government won’t take a stand and support what they supposedly believe in. Other counties have very successful programs. Why can’t we follow their lead?

Because I believe in protecting the bear population, and keeping our community safe, I will continue to do my part. I only wish our elected officials felt the same way!

Kudos to the whole Bear Smart team! Thanks to them for sticking in there even though our local government doesn’t support you in this effort.
