Durango Parks and Recreation and Durango Fire Protection District will soon resume prescribed slash pile burns in city-owned open spaces, with operations set to begin as soon as Monday.

The prescribed burns are planned for a number of open spaces through the winter, such as Dalla Mountain Park in north Durango, Lion’s Den in east Durango, Ball Lane in northwest Durango, the Horse Gulch Powerline trail and the Ella Vita trail system in Overend Mountain Park in east Durango, a city news release says.

The purpose of the burns is to eliminate brush and tree limbs that serve as hazardous fire fuels to mitigate wildfires, and the recent snow opens a window for safe burning.

The prescribed burns won’t affect public access to trailheads, but fire district and city vehicles will be present in the areas, the release says. Smoke and fires will likely be visible for up to several days after the burns in the prescription areas, and DFPD will be monitoring the burn sites.
