City Hall to close for a few hours for drill

An emergency drill will take place under the pretense of a make-believe fire Thursday, but one effect will be real.

City Hall, 949 E. Second Ave., will be closed Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Anyone wanting to pay a bill will have to wait for the afternoon. Parking tickets can also be paid at Durango Transit Center. Municipal court appearances have not been scheduled for that day.

Officials want to test their ability to react to a disaster if they have to move their base of operations elsewhere. It will test operational communications and coordination, as well as public- and private-sector responsibilities, said Sherri Dugdale, public information officer.

The city would like to be able to operate for 30 days from another location if possible.
