City needs to change spending choices

The city needs to reconsider the Animas River Trail extension to Oxbow Park this year as budget shortfalls are cropping up everywhere.

The put-in at Memorial Park II was just remodeled, and Lake Nighthorse is now available for paddle boarding. I feel like adding a parking lot and increased traffic will destroy the character of this park, and the waterfowl probably don’t like it either.

This money could be redirected to snow removal and road maintenance.

It doesn’t seem like the majority of voters are ready for a tax increase yet, so we had all better take a hard look at some of these projects that aren’t exactly essential to city function. Keeping Main Avenue safe for two lanes of traffic, cyclists and pedestrians who work and shop downtown should be a larger priority.
