City of Durango accepting used cooking oil Friday through Monday

The city of Durango Santa Rita Water Reclamation Facility will be accepting used cooking oil and grease from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday at the facility, 105 South Camino del Rio.

The cooking oil will be collected free of charge at a collection center set up in front of the facility near the red administration building in Santa Rita Park.

The oil will be turned into fuel for the wastewater treatment process.

The plant will accept peanut, vegetable, soy bean, canola, bacon grease, lard and corn oil for recycling (motor oil or any other non-cooking oil or grease will not be accepted).

Residents should let cooking oil cool down and then collect and seal the liquid in temperature-safe and leak-proof containers before delivering it to the plant.

Pouring oil or grease down any type of drain can lead to clogged or blocked pipes resulting sewage backing up into homes, lawns or streets.
