Community members are invited to meetings looking at potential Special Flood Hazard Areas from 5 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 2, and Thursday, June 3, on Zoom. Both meetings will cover the same information.
As part of the National Flood Insurance Program, the city of Durango has adopted floodplain management regulations for construction and development within designated areas of special flood hazard. These areas are identified by floodplain mapping and flood studies prepared by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The current mapping and flood study have been in effect since August 2010.
A recent program resulted in preliminary updates to floodplain mapping for La Plata County and incorporated municipalities, including Durango, Bayfield and Ignacio. Periodic updates to floodplain studies and maps are necessary to provide more accurate information based on new engineering studies and evaluations, enhanced topographic information and other tools.
The community meetings will present initial findings of the updated study.
