Last week, the Durango Parks and Recreation Department joined the ranks of only 145 parks and rec agencies across the nation with accreditation.
The Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies issued accreditation after department met 151 national standards.
“It’s a fairly rigorous process,” said Lauren Hoffmann, spokeswoman for the accrediting agency.
Durango Parks and Recreation started the process two years ago. During that time, the staff turned the Parks and Open Space Trails and Recreation Master Plan into a strategic plan and took steps toward a new city ordinance to protect open space, said director Cathy Metz.
