Civility improve quality our community

We are a community of different people. In many ways we are alike, and in many ways, we are very different and diverse.

I’ve been thinking about our community lately in view of recent events and letters to the editor, many highlighting our differences. We are to love one another, but this is difficult as sometimes, we even have trouble loving ourselves.

Maybe an interim step is being “civil” to each other. Civility doesn’t mean we necessarily agree with someone else, but it does mean we respect other’s differences, opinions and beliefs, even though different from our own. Civility is a weak shadow of love, but at least it’s a start in the right direction.

Civility comes from the Latin word “civis,” which means citizen. It appears in our wonderful community we have drifted into being “incivility,” which in Latin means, “not a citizen.” We who live here are “all citizens of Durango.” Can’t we act more like real citizens and at least be civil to each other?
