Grotts and Sturm score runner-up finishes

Kira Payer defended her title in the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic’s Coca-Cola Road race on Saturday while her boyfriend, Caleb Classen, improved on his runner-up finish from last year to win the men’s road race.

Payer rode the race with a broken collarbone, but broke away with runner-up Sarah Sturm and Michaela Thompson. Then on Coal Bank pass, Sturm dropped her chain and Payer took off for the win. She won the race in 2 hours, 30 minutes and 28.5 seconds, followed by Sturm in second and Thompson in third.

“It was my first full effort back, but it went super smooth,” she said.

In the men’s road race, a peloton of about 20 riders stayed together until Coal Bank Pass, then Howard Grotts put the hammer down on the climb and only Classen was able to stay with him. Classen then flew down the descent to build a gap and win the race in 2:07:18.6. Grotts finished second while Jack Odron finished third after a big solo effort.

“Howard pulled me the whole way up and we dropped everyone,” Classen said. “On the descent, I knew I could get Howard if I railed the corners and I did.”
