A new round of classes for adults at the Durango Education Center and the Fort Lewis College Continuing Education program are set to begin late this month or in February.

Computer classes and foreign language instruction always are in demand, said Kelly Quach, the community education and marketing coordinator at the Durango Education Center.

“Foreign languages, particularly Spanish, are popular with people starting to plan vacations,” Quach said. “We base our offerings on requests from the public, people interested in teaching a certain subject and employers requesting customized classes for employees.”

Web page design and stress management classes will be offered later, she said.

Gigi Baty, director of continuing education at Fort Lewis College, said 3,000 people are enrolled in the college’s nontraditional classes.

The campus will offer more than 100 classes from February to August, she said.

Always in demand are classes in geology, writing, wine tasting and photography, Baty said. Social Security planning is coming on strong as more people take an interest in planning for retirement years, she said.

Beginning Jan. 27 at the Durango Education Center are classes in travel; beginning and conversational Spanish; computer fundamentals; and Excel 1. A class in iPad introduction begins Jan. 31.

The center is at 701 Camino del Rio. Information is available at www.durangoedcenter.org or call 382-4354. Advance registration and payment is required for all classes.

Fort Lewis College is at 1000 Rim Drive. Continuing education information and registration instructions are available at www.fortlewis.edu/continuinged or at 247-7385.

Among classes beginning in early February are Social Security Planning, beginning Italian and Spanish, a four-part series about wine tasting, advanced instruction for beginning birders and Japanese culture.
