Cloudy skies expected to clear – gradually

Highs near 70 predicted by midweek in Durango
Welcome to May in the San Juan Mountains. After a fairly snowy April, more snow greeted livestock and travelers alike on the first day of May. Durango has only a slight chance of rain Monday.

The rare blustery weather Southwest Colorado is experiencing is expected to gradually give way to more sunshine through midweek.

But partly cloudy skies with a continuing slight chance of showers and thunderstorms are forecast by the National Weather Service through Saturday.

Only a 10 percent chance of rain is expected in Durango on Monday bumping up to a 20 percent chance on Tuesday. Wednesday should be the sunniest day of the week.

In Silverton, a 30 percent chance of snow is forecast for Monday and Monday night dropping to a 20 percent chance Tuesday night.

On Sunday morning, chain laws were in effect on Wolf Creek Pass until early afternoon.

Wolf Creek Ski Area on Sunday reported more than 12 inches of new snow since Thursday, with another 10 inches expected Sunday night. The ski area held an impromptu weekend opening.

Julie Malingowski, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, said Monday afternoon showers are more likely in the high country, and Durango is expected to remain dry.

By Wednesday, Durango’s high temperature is expected to close in on 70 degrees.
