Coal Bank, Molas passes closed Friday night for fatal crash

Three vehicles involved; blizzard conditions

U.S. Highway 550 over Coal Bank and Molas passes north of Durango were closed in both directions Friday night for a three-vehicle crash that involved a fatality, according to the Colorado State Patrol in Denver.

The crash was reported at 5:43 p.m. near mile marker 62, on the south side of Molas Pass, said Master Trooper Gary Cutler. The highway was closed from milepost 50 near the base of Coal Bank Pass to milepost 70 near Silverton. The crash scene was experiencing blizzard conditions Friday night, he said.

“It will be closed for probably quite a while,” said Capt. Adrian Driscoll with the State Patrol in Durango, at 6:30 p.m.

Troopers were able to confirm one person died in the crash, but no further information was immediately available Friday night.

The crash involved an Isuzu Trooper pulling a gooseneck trailer, a Dodge Ram pickup and a Nissan Titan, Cutler said.
