I was impressed with the land use code revision meetings as reported in the Durango Herald.
Both the folks opposing the proposed code and the response of the county staff to rewrite the code addressing their objections represents democracy at work.
However, the further action of recalling Gwen Lachelt makes no sense whatsoever. The code proposal is the responsibility of all the commissioners who have agreed to its revision.
Support of energy development has also been mentioned by those proposing a recall of Gwen Lachelt. This reasoning is bogus because she has supported energy development during her tenure. The back channeling to turn this issue into a recall election of one commissioner is a divisive political maneuver that will harm our community.
The office of Americans for Prosperity (ie: Koch brothers) opening in Durango is detrimental to our ongoing democratic process over the land use code and energy development. Research Koch Industries political practices and rethink our options please.
Also, Gwen Lachelt is term limited in 2020 and spending $60,000 on a recall election doesn’t resolve anything for our community.
