Colby Simmons competes in U.S. Pro Road National Championships

Simmons finishes ninth in criterium, 16th in road race

Colby Simmons of the Jumbo Visma Development team scored a top-10 finish at USA Cycling Pro Road National Championships, held Thursday through Sunday in Knoxville, Tennessee.

In the elite men’s criterium, Simmons was near the front and fighting for the lead with two laps to go. Luke Lamperti of Trinity Racing, however, finished with a strong sprint to win the race for a second consecutive year in 1 hour, 18 minutes and 41 seconds.

Simmons crossed ninth, finishing just four seconds after Lamperti.

Another Durango cyclist, James Hilyer of the Rio Grande Elite Cycling team, finished 21st in 1:18:55.

Kendall Ryan of L39ion of Los Angeles, meanwhile, won the women’s criterium title in 1:10:05. Ava Hachman, riding for the Levine Law Group, did not finish.

In the elite men’s road race, a new U.S. national champion was crowned: Kyle Murphy of Human Powered Health won the title by three seconds in 4:27:48, completing each of his 17 laps in an average of 14:47.

Simmons finished 16th in the 121-man field in 4:29:01.

Hilyer finished 42nd in 4:40:00.

Emma Langley won the women’s road race in 2:57:12.
