Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser will hold a town hall Saturday in Durango to discuss this year’s legislative session and other state and local affairs.
Local law enforcement officials, 6th Judicial District Attorney Christian Champagne and La Plata County Sheriff Sean Smith plan to join Colorado State Rep. Barbara McLachlan and Weiser at 3:15 p.m. Saturday at Durango Public Library. Weiser will likely discuss the “red flag” bill allowing law enforcement to seize weapons from people who could be a danger to themselves or others and his efforts with the Federal Communication Commission to bring Denver television to Southwest Colorado.
Weiser has said publicly that any sheriffs who don’t want to enforce the “red flag” rule should resign. Montezuma County commissioners declared the county a gun sanctuary in response to the law. Smith has supported the law, saying it will help prevent suicides and homicides.
Residents in Southwest Colorado have been fighting for Colorado-based television for years, and Weiser promised in his campaign last year that he would join La Plata County in its fight to bring Denver stations to this corner of the state.
Durango Government Television circumvented market forces when it started broadcasting Denver’s 9News on the public station over the airwaves for eight hours a day during the week. The programming is free over the airwaves, accessed with a digital antenna. Weiser said previously that he’s committed to bringing that programming to satellite users.
