Colorado Parks and Wildlife reminds residents that they should not pick up or try to feed abandoned young animals.
Handling young wildlife does more harm than good, the agency says. Wildlife experts say it is normal for adult animals to leave their young in safe places while they forage for food.
If young wildlife are found, leave the animal where it is and keep pets out of the area. Quietly observe the animal from a distance using binoculars and do not hover so close that the wild parents are afraid to return to the area.
If, after 24 hours, the parent does not return, it is possible the newborn was abandoned or the parent is dead.
Residents concerned about young animals can call CPW at 247-0855 and the agency will work with a certified wildlife rehabilitation center to get aid to the wildlife if possible. Do not move the animal.
