Colorado Public Lands Day one to enjoy

I’m so glad to see The Durango Herald report on our newest state holiday, Colorado Public Lands Day! This holiday is a major win for all of us in Colorado. Our public lands are what make this state great, and they’re the backbone of our economy here in the Southwest. Unlike in most of the world, we have free or cheap access to vast swaths of open spaces that are protected not only for human use, but for the wildlife and for nature’s sake as well. Public lands are especially important for underprivileged families, as they provide a chance to recreate or enjoy nature and the outdoors free of cost. Protected public lands are what make our state and nation so special; they’re truly something to be thankful for.

So here’s a big thank you to all who advocated for a Public Lands Day, and to our state senator, Ellen Roberts, who supported the bipartisan bill that made this holiday possible.

But shame on you, J. Paul Brown, for voting against Public Lands Day. Brown apparently doesn’t seem to care much for our public lands, even though he represents some of the most beautiful open spaces in the country and lots of people, like you and me, who love them. What J. Paul Brown does care about, though, is getting re-elected. Remember his unwillingness to support public lands and his vote against our new state holiday this November.
