Colorado should consider mid-decade redistricting

Attorney General Phil Weiser has proposed a narrowly drawn, emergency mid-decade redistricting for Colorado and recommends that it be put to voters in 2026 as a state constitutional amendment.

This approach isn’t about revenge, as some might argue. Rather, it’s about creating a disincentive for other states to rig the next election and potentially tilt control of the U.S. House in 2026. If other states refuse to play by the rules and subvert our democracy, then we must use every tool available to stop them.

I’ve seen Congress caught flat-footed in response to actions taken by the Trump administration while relying on an outdated and ineffective toolbox.

This is a very different time, and blue states should consider a different course of action to counter the gerrymandering effort Donald Trump is urging governors in red states to pursue. It’s time to update the toolbox.

The attorney general’s proposal is not a top-down edict. It’s an appeal to voters to think creatively about how to address the inequity that would occur if Trump succeeds in this effort.
