Colorado snowstorm snarls traffic, flights at DIA

DENVER – Up to a foot of snow has fallen on Colorado’s Front Range, snarling traffic, canceling and delaying flights at Denver International Airport and putting a crimp on Christmas shopping.

National Weather Service forecaster Kyle Fredin says bands of snow swept through the region overnight into Saturday along with sub-freezing temperatures that are expected to drop even more by Sunday.

Denver International Airport says more than 300 flights have been canceled and many flights were delayed because of heavier-than-expected snowfall. Some planes had trouble getting to their gates. Other people reported problems getting to the airport.

Kevin Sweeney was eating at a downtown Denver restaurant, where he was out of what he said was “a mess” on Interstate 25.

“I worked for the fire department for 45 years, and we used to call this highway hockey because people keep bumping into each other,” said Sweeney, of Brighton, a town about 20 miles northeast of Denver. “I think it’s that first big snow thing.”

The Colorado State Patrol reported numerous accidents, and cars and other vehicles without chains are being turned away from some mountain passes because of deep snow.
