Colorado’s rural teachers deserve a fair chance

I am writing as a father, law enforcement veteran and unaffiliated candidate for governor of Colorado.

In towns across rural Colorado, schools aren’t just buildings they are the heart of the community. Friday night football, local concerts, school plays bring us together. Behind the scenes, too many rural schools are struggling to keep doors open with enough teachers, updated classrooms and the resources kids need.

The reason is simple: We aren’t paying teachers enough to stay. Rural teachers often earn even less than their peers in urban areas, and with the rising cost of living, many leave for bigger cities or different careers. That leaves small-town schools scrambling to fill classrooms, and it’s our kids who pay the price.

We can do better. As governor, I will fight for a 20% statewide teacher pay raise, ensuring rural schools aren’t left behind. This isn’t about new taxes, it’s about prioritizing spending and cutting government waste, so every dollar goes where it belongs.

We also need to modernize rural schools with stronger internet access, updated technology and more pathways to careers in agriculture, trades, health care and tech. Every Colorado kid should graduate ready for success, no matter their ZIP code.

And with the Colorado Clarity Act, you’ll know exactly where every tax dollar is going. If the state promises rural communities support, you’ll see it in black and white. No more guessing. No more broken promises.

Our rural communities deserve respect, investment and a fair shot at opportunity. Strong schools build strong towns, and strong towns build a strong Colorado.
