Commission reminds consumers to warm up safely

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reminds families to remain vigilant about safety in and around the home this winter.

Carbon monoxide safety: Use portable generators outside the home at least 20 feet from the residence with exhaust pointed away. Never use a generator inside a home, basement, shed or garage. The exhaust can kill in minutes. Never leave a car running in a garage. Install carbon dioxide alarms on every level and outside all sleeping areas.Space heater safety: Keep flammable objects at least 3 feet away from space heaters. Place them on a stable, level, flat surface. Turn off space heaters when sleeping, or when leaving a room. Install smoke alarms on every floor, outside all sleeping areas and inside each bedroom.Snow blower safety: Never leave a gas-powered snow blower running in an enclosed area. Don’t add gasoline to a running or hot engine. Always keep the gasoline in a portable gasoline container with a child-resistant closure to prevent child poisonings. For more information, visit www.cpsc.gov.
