One major objection is the lack of electing the community development director, an appointed position with overpowering authority. The commission’s position, while recognizing the risk of corruption, was that, basically, the public is not sophisticated enough to elect such a person.
Further, public notice, on July 19, concerning 1041, was through the commission’s website. If you’re not online or reviewing the site, you were not informed.
If you’ve read 1041, you can see why so many people were concerned about the scope of projects subject to 1041 regulations. If individuals/residents are excluded, state it.
Finally, calls for a larger public forum, as the Herald pointed out, appeared to fall on deaf ears. Commissioners’ minds appeared made up, regardless of public input, because they think they know what’s best for us.
