‘Communist rules’ discredited for decades

I just read the “Communist rules ...” letter to the editor by Phyllis Ludwig in the Nov. 20-21 Herald.

A quick internet search shows that the alleged 1919 “document” referred to in the letter has been discredited for decades. A well-researched New York Times article from 1970 cites credible sources who say the document is “completely spurious.”

In 2000, Snopes labeled it as False. Plenty of other sources have debunked it over time. The document has been appearing since at lease 1946, with each publication citing the previous publication as a source.

Did Herald editorial staff take the few minutes necessary to check the document’s authenticity before publishing the letter?
