Southwest Colorado Community College welding instructors Robert Reed and Cody Hager and student Leah Starr received a donation of $3,500 from Air Products & Chemicals, which owns and operates the Doe Canyon Helium Plant in Cahone.
Welding students from SCCC visited the helium plant as part of a field trip this year and made a positive impression on site manager Darrin McCarty. McCarty and Elizabeth Ann O’Hare presented the donations, which were given through the Pueblo Community College Foundation.
The Doe Canyon plant is the only one in the world extracting helium from a gas stream primarily made up of carbon dioxide. McCarty said that helium is scarce today, and the helium they extract and liquefy was already sold before the facility was built.
