National Night Out, a nationwide event held on the first Tuesday of every August, returns to Durango next week with live music, food, games and educational activities, according to the city of Durango.
The city said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, the fun begins at 4:30 p.m. at Buckley Park and the event is scheduled to last until 8 p.m.
The 1200 block of Main Avenue will be closed from 3 to 8 p.m. to accommodate the event.
McKenzie Purdue, Durango Police Department analyst and National Night Out co-organizer, said a number of law enforcement and emergency responder organizations will be present for celebrations.
That includes Colorado State Patrol, Durango/La Plata Emergency Communications Center, Durango Fire Protection District, La Plata County Search and Rescue, the Colorado Department of Transportation and, of course, Durango Police Department.
Groups attending the event to provide activities and food for the community include the Powerhouse, April's Garden, The Hundred Club of Durango, the Durango Evening Rotary Club, Alys Hanson providing henna tattoos, Durango Coca-Cola and Serious Texas BBQ. Food provided by Serious Texas BBQ will be paid for and donated by Michael Stratton.
She said National Night Out is a way to connect the community with law enforcement and first responders to clear up misconceptions about their service.
She added, “It's all about just showing support for the love of Durango that we all have and coming together as one to celebrate a good time.”
