DENVER – An energy company says it has closed a Colorado coal power plant three years ahead of schedule.
The Denver Post reported Tri-State Generation and Transmission retired the Nucla Station in western Colorado Thursday.
Westminster-based Tri-State says in a statement that the 100-megawatt facility was originally scheduled to close at the end of 2022.
Officials say the plant 104 miles south of Grand Junction ran through its supply of on-site fuel Sept. 9.
Tri-State says it will also provide $500,000 to the community in Nucla over the next five years to assist with the transition.
The utility provides wholesale power to rural electric associations across Colorado.
Tri-State says the closure allows it to meet the requirements of a state plan to cut regional haze.
