Compliments to a recent letter writer

In our democracy – especially in a town, as opposed to a big city – a letter to the editor of a local newspaper serves many purposes.

In a town, more readers know the writer, so it is much more effective. The writer has an opportunity to voice his or her feelings about a subject. Equally important, the newspaper editor gets some feedback from those who read what is written, and evaluates how they paper is serving the community.

As an example, I compliment William Rottenberg on his letter (Aug. 30) when he wrote about the Herald’s insertion of something written by Dana Milbank, a leftist journalist, disparaging Jews in the Trump administration.

In the spirit of constructive criticism, I wish the Herald, if it is to act as a newspaper and not biased political propaganda, would try to report balanced news. The article Mr. Rottenberg commented on is a perfect example of what soils the impression of a particular newspaper in having objective reporting.

We readers would like to continue to support our local newspaper. Please remember that you have a wide spectrum of readers, unless you want to narrow the spectrum.

Editor’s note: Dana Milbank’s column was an opinion piece, not a news article, and was printed on the Opinion page of the Herald.
