Computers, internet support offered to K-12 students in Southwest Colorado

PCs for Kids accepting applications
PCs for Kids is accepting applications for computers and internet access support from K-12 students in Southwest Colorado.

A new collaborative effort in Southwest Colorado aims to keep distance learners connected to school.

PCs for Kids is accepting applications for computers and internet access support from students in grades K-12, across Archuleta, Dolores, La Plata, Montezuma and San Juan counties.

The deadline for applications is Nov. 16. To apply, visit www.sjboces.org/apps/pages/pcsforkids or request paper applications from the student’s school district. Applications are available in English and in Spanish. Families are asked to contribute $20 toward the cost, and scholarships may be available.

Applications will be reviewed and the most urgent needs will be addressed first. Not all applicants are guaranteed a computer or connectivity, but the goal is to assist as many people as possible with the funding and machines available.

PCs for Kids is a local collaboration initiated by United Way of Southwest Colorado, Alpine Bank, Boys & Girls Club of La Plata County, the Durango Education Foundation and Durango School District 9-R.

The ability to expand beyond the pilot project came when the local group was awarded $100,000 from the governor’s COVID-Relief Fund. The collaboration now includes the original participants as well as San Juan Board of Cooperative Services, Southwest Colorado Council of Governments, The Piñon Project Family Resource Center, Compañeros, The ARC of Southwest Colorado, nine school districts from the region and several Chambers of Commerce.

Businesses or people interested in donating money can make a contribution at www.unitedway-swco.org/donate.

Businesses that have computers for refurbishing may contact Beth Drum at 426-7168.
