Conservative values: Abandoned or always a lie

Since the 1950s, Americans have been told that “conservative values” meant self-control, individual and civic responsibility, upholding the rule of law, and fiscal restraint. The current Trump administration forces an unavoidable question: Have these values been abandoned, or were they a lie from an earlier generation that made his authoritarian takeover possible?

Will the American citizenry reclaim a common set of values that allows individual freedom and civic responsibility while upholding the rule of law?
