Conservatives welcome in climate fight

Thanks to Susan Atkinson for her insightful piece on the president-elect and climate (Opinion, Herald, Dec. 4). As has been said many times since Vice President Gore made the point 10 years ago, this is a moral issue, not a political one. Unfortunately, many people choose to politicize the issue, using it as a soap box to condemn perceived opponents.

Fortunately, calmer heads recognize the challenge we face. These people prefer to address this concern with courage and determination rather than fear and anger.

One such group is the Conservative Caucus of Citizens’ Climate Lobby. Former South Carolina Republican Congressman Bob Inglis, George Schultz former secretary of state under President Reagan, and retired Navy Rear Admiral David Titley are on the advisory committee of this caucus. These conscientious, principled people recognize the importance of working “across the aisle” to address climate change.

I invite concerned conservatives to join them. There is a Durango chapter of the nonpartisan Citizens’ Climate Lobby of which Dr. James Hansen has said, “Most impressive is the work of Citizens’ Climate Lobby. ... If you want to join the fight to save the planet, to save creation for your grandchildren, there is no more effective step you could take than becoming an active member of this group.”

I’d like to reach out in particular to conservatives inclined to join us. Please join us Monday, Dec. 12, at the Durango Public Library to view an episode of “Years of Living Dangerously” covering CCL. At 5:30 Dec. 14 at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church is our monthly meeting. Please contact us at durnagoccl@gmail.com.
