La Plata County announced Thursday it’s planning to start a realignment project at the intersection of county roads 223 and 225, northeast of Elmore’s Corner, with work beginning Monday.
“This project will realign the intersection so that the through movement matches the predominant traffic flow,” the county said in a news release.
The realignment is a result of the Colorado Department of Transportation’s realignment of the intersection of U.S. Highway 160 and County Road 225A in 2010, said Jim Davis, director of public works for the county.
“This is a public-safety and convenience issue,” he said. “Most traffic heads north up 225, so there’s been a concern that a T-bone accident might occur.”
After the project is complete, drivers will have to make a left turn to continue west on County Road 223. The stop sign will also be repositioned.
Work on the project will take place from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and is expected to last through October.
Traffic may be reduced to one lane at times, and delays may be as long as 15 minutes, the county said.
“Motorists are encouraged to leave a little more travel time,” the release said, “and to drive with caution through the work zone for their own safety and the safety of the work crews.”
